Day In The Life: Social Media Manager

Hello, I’m Savannah! 👋

A social media manager at CB Digital Design, and my day is never boring. Sure, I have to deal with trolls and haters on a daily basis—but I also get to work with some GREAT brands and content creators.

So, here’s what my typical day looks like:

Day In The Life of a Social Media Manager at CB Digital Design

08:00

Coffee & News Check

Fresh cup of coffee with a sprinkle of cinnamon, check. Toggl Time Management Tool open, check. Social media accounts set up in the Toggl app, done! Now it’s time for me to get started on your day by checking your social media channels and making sure there are no comments or questions left unanswered from customers.

08:30

Team Meeting

It’s that time of day where you get to sit down with the team and go over what needs to be done for the next 24 hours. Each project has its own channel within our Microsoft Teams chat and we use these as our agenda for each meeting. Between social media managers, digital marketing managersweb designers & branding/graphic designers; we all use Asana for project management and add tasks from our meeting, which means no more forgetting things later in the week!

09:00

TikTok Management

If you’re new to the world of social media management, TikTok is a social media platform that allows users to create short videos and share them with friends. The app has become very popular in recent years and has been referred to as “a cross between Snapchat and Instagram for teens.”

As a social media manager for this platform, I’m responsible for researching trends on the platform, creating content based on those trends (such as how-to videos), showcasing your brand’s personality through targeted posts, and much more.

Market Research & Platform Monitoring

At this point, we have a good idea of who our client’s target audience is and what they want. I have also done some research on the market, competitors, and trends. Now is the time to monitor client’s platforms to see what is trending. This can be really helpful for organising content or getting inspiration for new campaigns that are going to be launched in the future. My top tips for staying up to date as a social media manager:

  • Look at the competition: It’s important to see what others are doing so you don’t end up repeating it over again or copying their ideas directly (which isn’t great). You should look at how they use social media platforms like Facebook Ads or Instagram Ads as well as other marketing strategies like email marketing campaigns.
  • Look at what’s working for them: If an ad performed well for one company but didn’t work for another company with a similar product offering then maybe there was something specific about how they advertised that made it work better than yours did? Maybe you need more data points from more people before making any conclusions about whether it was successful or not?
  • Look at what isn’t working: It might just be too early yet since there aren’t enough data points yet either way (ie., maybe no one bought anything yet because no one saw these ads)!
  • We use Later for all of our social media scheduling and top-line platform insights.

Lunch & Dog Walk

We both like lunchtime. One of the perks of working remote is that I have the freedom to give my rescue pup a cuddle, cook up a “master chef worthy” meal or go on a short trail walk.

13:00

Back To Work!

You’ve got a lot of emails to respond to. You might need to answer client queries, or send out an email newsletter. As well as this, you’ll want to keep an eye on social media platforms and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Instagram.

At CB Digital, we pride ourselves on our customer service and response time! We know it’s important for our client’s to feel assured their accounts are in safe hands at all times.

13:30

Client’s Social Media Engagement

Whether you’re a business owner or you’re a social media manager, you know that engagement is the most effective way to get your audience interested in what you have to say and see. That’s why I handle this for our clients – I love seeing their posts get shared, commented on and liked by their followers.

14:30

Client Meetings

Most afternoons, I have client meetings to discuss social media strategy updates, content for the following month and any launches. Today is a monthly meeting with one of my clients who uses our social & email management service!

Big night in after a big day at work means a Gin & Tonic, friends, and Emily In Paris, of course!

After a long day at work, it’s easy to fall into the trap of overworking and not taking time for yourself. But as with most things in life, balance is key. To ensure that I’m relaxing after work without falling into a pattern of excessive scrolling on my phone or laptop, I like to keep up with my friends via social media (I’m @savannahdealmeida) and then unwind by cooking dinner. A big night in involves eating well, while watching Netflix, Emily In Paris or more recently, Love Island!

What are your go-to ways of relaxing after work? Let me know in the comments section below!

Working on social media is WAY more fun & flexible than I expected!

As a social media manager, I get to work on a variety of platforms. My day typically consists of working with clients to create content and posting it across all of their accounts. The best part about this job is that it’s never the same! One day, I might be planning social posts for an e-commerce brand or pitching to influencers on behalf of a small business, and the next day I could be running a campaign photoshoot. It’s so much fun being able to see how each platform works differently, especially since each one has its own unique features.

I really enjoy when I have a super productive day because it helps me feel more accomplished at the end of my work week (and makes me want to go back into work the next day). As someone who works remotely from home (which is great because I live in South Africa), I love the flexibility CB Digital provides me whilst maintaining a work/life balance!

Day In The Life of a Social Media Manager at CB Digital Design

As you can see, the life of a social media manager certainly keeps you on your toes, but it is very rewarding. It’s great to be able to understand what people really want from their brands and then use this knowledge to create something that connects with their audience on an emotional level. I’m excited about what the future holds for me in this profession!
