This is a question that Social Media Managers hear quite a lot, and for good reason. The Instagram Reels option was originally launched in the US in December of 2017 and has been on a rapid rise since then.
As of July 2018, this feature became available for all countries.
Some people are not too sure if Instagram Reels are worth the time or effort yet, but we think it is all about defining your goal. Are you new to Instagram? Does your job revolve around Instagram? Or are you on there for fun? If you’re planning to dedicate a little more time on Instagram, it’s definitely worth checking them out!
Here’s the thing with reels: you’re going that extra mile for your followers! Which means you’ll often receive great feedback as to whether or not reels are worth it. Instagram says that using reels, amongst their other features, will improve your posts.
The big benefit of this is that your content will not only be more engaging, it’ll also get more reach and likes (and hopefully comments too). As mentioned previously, whether or not that’s worth your time will depend on what your goal is. For example, if you’re trying to increase engagement on your Instagram account, you definitely want to consider it.
Before we explain why, let’s talk about to create an Instagram Reel.
HOW TO CREATE AN INSTAGRAM REEL?
Click the cross at top right of your Instagram profile to show a drop down menu, select Reel.
Start adding images and clips to the editing platform. Once you’ve added the first clip, your reel will already be created. You can then continue adding and editing clips to make a professional and engaging piece of content.
You have the option to create a 30 or 60 second video.
HOW DO I POST MY INSTAGRAM REEL?
Once you’ve created your reel, the next step is to decide where you’ll post it. You can choose whether to feature the reel on your main feed or keep it within the reels section of your profile. If you have a strong aesthetic, make sure to take in to account whether you need to design a branded cover first?
You can then share it on to your Instagram story, which we highly recommend to increase your engagement rates.
If you decide to “Share on Stories”, a 5 second clip will only be view-able by those who follow you.
By “Uploading to Profile”, this will allow you to post your reel as a Video Post. Most people recommend using this option since it makes the reel easily viewable for those scrolling down your feed.
Now, before you go posting a million of these reels, there are a few final things we would like you to know. Firstly, it’s best if your reel only contains one theme. Don’t try and jam pack too much information in to one 60 second video. Secondly, try not to place the same content in more than one reel. Keep your content as different as possible – everyone is creating reels so to give yours the best chance of being successful, stick to your niche but BE ORIGINAL!
After all, your followers love to see variety and original content.
As noted earlier, whether or not Instagram Reels are worth it is going to depend on what your goals are with them. If you’re trying to increase engagement on your Instagram account (which we know is possible) this could be the option for you. But if that’s not your goal yet, it might be best waiting a little longer to build up your knowledge of the features and then start to play with them.
