It has been a very busy few months for the CB Digital team. With exciting doors opening, 2021 is looking very positive. We are looking forward to hitting the ground running and one way we want to do this is to focus more on our blog content.
To start off our blogging resolution, I want to tell you all about our Volunteer Programme!
Last November. 10 weeks ago, the team and I decided that it was time to give the next generation a platform to grow.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been a huge struggle for businesses to carry out their usual work placements or experience programmes. As businesses continue to figure out how to get through this financial crisis, students have shot quite low down on the priority list.
However, we can’t forget how valuable work experience is for young entrepreneurs.
Whilst Chloe and I sat in our homes, wondering how we were going to time-manage our growing client list, it occurred to us that we needed additional help. However, as a small business it didn’t make financial sense to take on another employee.
And then… the light bulb moment. We created the CB Digital Design 10-week Volunteer Programme. It is such a worrying time for students and their future plans, so we wanted to give them all the tips and tricks that they need to start a career in marketing.
Before I go on show you the amazing work the students produced, Chloe and I want to quickly delve in to our work experience journeys. How they got us to where we are today and why this was such a passion project of the CB Digital team.
CHLOE’S WORK EXPERIENCE JOURNEY
I spent 100+ hours volunteering at a range of businesses & events during my University degree, along with a year in industry.
Therefore, I appreciate that those hours and additional research is what has got me to where I am today. I think it’s very important to dip your toes in many aspects of the industry your passionate about, so you know what direction you want your career to go in.
I set myself a goal ever since becoming a dual business owner (CB Digital Design and The Gin Kitchen), to give the next generation an opportunity to follow in my footsteps. This year has been harder for students more than ever, I can’t imagine what it feels like to graduate and feel you have no industry support.
CB Digital wanted to put a stop to that, and we’re supporting our students with the next step in their career paths.
I want to be able to give student’s confidence to succeed in whatever they set their mind to. The aim of the programme was to show various elements of a fast-paced digital marketing agency to as many of you as we could, in the hope it would broaden your mindset on what area of marketing you might want to go into next.
I don’t think there is any number or word to describe how valuable work experience is. It’s one thing I look for as an employer on an applicant’s CV, to see how much effort they have spent volunteering or working in the industry.
You will gain invaluable skills, that can be transferred to many different job roles by joining a placement/work experience programme.
ELIZABETH’S WORK EXPERIENCE JOURNEY
When it comes to work experience, I took my first role of shadowing a reporter when I was 15 at the local newspaper. I went on to work with bloggers in London and other regional publications.
The beauty of work experience is that it can give you experience in all different industries. If you change career path like I did, from aspiring journalist to keen marketer, you can be sure you have made the right decision.
I therefore went on to do social media internships, shadow website designers and have a temporary role in the FA’s media marketing team.
You will never know what you want to do until you’ve been in a real-life industry environment. If I had continued down the route of being a journalist, I would realise too late that it wasn’t want I wanted to do in the long run.
From the experience I had gained, I was then able to put this all on my CV and cater my future plans to going into the Marketing industry. Which in turn… led me to the amazing job I have today.
Each individual experience taught me tips and tricks that I now carry into every day of my job. I will forever be thankful to Chloe for giving me the opportunity to step on the career ladder doing what I love.
It was a pleasure to lead the programme and give this same opportunity to 18 students.
Every week of the CB Digital programme was dedicated to a different Marketing service. Blog writing, social media content creation, buyer persona analysis, brand development, email marketing and that is just to list a few.
HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THEIR WORK:
We provided industry top tips and individual feedback for every piece of work that was submitted. I scheduled video calls and we had constant communication with the students using Microsoft Teams.
From industry knowledge to people skills, work experience is invaluable to a young person’s career path. It certifies confidence in their chosen job, boosts there CVs and teaches them skills that they won’t be able to find anywhere else.
Chloe and I are very proud that we have been able to give this opportunity to 18 young entrepreneurs and we can’t wait to see what they get up to next!
HERE IS WHAT SOME OF THE STUDENTS HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE PROGRAMME:
After struggling to find an internship for some time I was offered one at this agency and can honestly say I’ve never felt so welcomed or comfortable! Chloe and Elizabeth are the loveliest people and have always been available, even if it’s outside of office hours, to help me with a task even though they’re very busy themselves! No question or idea was ever unwelcomed, and they’ve always taken the time to give thorough feedback on every aspect of my work. If you need help with any aspect of your business, then I couldn’t recommend this agency and the people behind it enough as they will really take the time to listen you and your business’ needs.
Thank you very much for the past ten weeks, they have been incredible and as a result I finally know what I want to do after I graduate from University in the summer. I can’t thank Elizabeth and Chloe enough for that as I’ll admit I was terrified.
Chloe and Elizabeth have put together an incredible 10-week internship. They have been extremely approachable and helpful the entire way through. It’s been a pleasure working for CB Digital and this experience has taught me so much about the PR and marketing industry.
We loved every minute working with all 18 Nottingham Trent University students. It’s time consuming and costly to a small business, but the feedback we had showed the students appreciated every minute of it.
We’re looking to launch 2 more programmes in 2020; Design & Social Media Marketing.
